The Gift of Grandchildren

By Bruce Cooper

This is Joe (Josephine), our newest grand daughter. I’d like you to look into her eyes. She’s just starting to put words together into sentences and there’s no stopping her. She melts my heart. She calls me Papa and that is a gift.

It’s the gifts of our own children that God gives us, where we learn about what love actually means and how that love can cause so much joy and sorrow at the same time. And then, there are the grand children, which is like phase two, where we get to see the joy and wonder of a child all over again.

God is our Father and we are His children. I’m sure we cause Him joy and sorrow at the same time too. And yet, it’s that parental love that looks beyond the shortfalls, that loves in spite of the hurt our children may cause us, that speaks to me of God’s love for us.

Yet God’s love is so much greater than ours.

John 3:16 NIVFor God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

1 John 4:8 NIVWhoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.”

How could we live and endure what we do if it were not for love? The love we share with our spouse, our children and our grandchildren. The love of Christian brothers and sisters, the love of our in-laws, the love of our friends. And foremost of all, if we choose to enter into it, the love between our Creator and ourselves.

When I have the gift of being alone with my grand daughter (I get to take her to the park), I am at times overwhelmed with the joy and gratitude that sweeps over me about the goodness of our Father in Heaven, the goodness of Jesus and the witness of the Holy Spirit within me. I don’t claim to understand it all, but I find that I just can’t help but thank God for how and who He is and the deep depths of this thing called love that He has shared with us. It’s beauty is beyond words and it is the witness of a spiritual reality that transcends our physical world.

We frequently see examples of how parents have given of themselves to further the possibility of a good life for their children but God has gone way beyond that. He never compromises Himself, He can’t, He is Holy. Yet His love transcends mere personal sacrifice at a superficial level, His level of sacrifice for us is by pure example and a complete love that disregards Himself unto death and a resurrected new life, so that we might be in union with Him and share His love for us and us for Him. A suffering love, displayed before us, totally unjustified, totally unworthy, just because He is love.

The love that swells up in our hearts towards our children or our grand children speaks of that kind of love, only it just barely scratches the surface. The wonder of this gift of life that we have been given is that this love is there at all.

Romans 5:8 NIV “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Worthy is the Lamb! Blessings!
