Heavenly Invasion Needed

There’s a dilemma that accompanies our desire to live for Christ as He wanted, and to walk upon the narrow path, and that is, while we want to do what’s right, we can’t. We know what we’re doing is wrong, but we are helpless to stop it.

The Apostle Paul said, “For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do.” (Romans 7:15)

How can we gain the confidence to move beyond our own self-destructive tendencies and beyond our fears to defeat the enemy that saps our spirits, demoralizes our incentive, and prevents us from moving forward?

While sin is the major culprit pulling us off the narrow path and unto the shoulder of the road, there’s another subtler detour we run into, and that is the multiple distractions from all the programs offering to help.

Got a problem go to counseling, join a support group, read this book, do these four steps, take these pills, or wear this particular bracelet to reduce the pain.

While most of these aren’t bad and can help, they don’t destroy the real enemy or because of our difficulties. They don’t destroy the addictions nor stop the dark impulses of the human soul. And the vows we make, especially every new year, never overcome the power of the world, our flesh, or the devil.

It takes more power than what we can muster to walk upon this narrow path.

When I read the Scriptures and church history, I see God moving mightily on behalf of His people bringing both renewal and revival through a heavenly invasion.

The Lord speaks of this throughout the Scriptures, but no place more succinctly than what the angel said to king Zerubbabel through the prophet Zechariah.

“This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ says the Lord of hosts.” (Zechariah 4:6)

One thing that all these other “solutions” out there have in common is that they only treat the symptoms, merely putting a band aide on the problem or just treat the behavior. It’s only the power of the Holy Spirit and God’s word that will truly transform us from the inside out and give us His strength to overcome. I love how the Apostle Paul finishes this scripture reference in Romans 7 concluding in verses 24-25a, “O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord!”
