“Neither give place to the devil . . .Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore…” (Ephesians 4:37 & 6:13-14a)

I do a lot of jogging. One thing I’ve learned while jogging in a neighborhood like mine is that, sometimes, dogs will charge out at you barking, growling and even chasing after you. It can be a little fearful, but mostly annoying! But no matter how many or how big the dogs are, I’ve found the best way to handle them is to just stop, stand facing towards them and every time, they’ll turn and go away. I’ve learned, while on my daily run, most dogs are all bark and no bite.

As we run the daily spiritual “race that is set before us” (Hebrews 12:1), we shouldn’t be surprised when the ole devil comes at us in his relentless attempts to distract and trip us up. The Bible teaches us the devil is a lot like those dogs because, most of the time, he’s all bark and no bite. The Word of God instructs us to be ready when he comes. We are to “put on” the armor of God’s Word and prayer and then we’re instructed to simply “stand” against him when (not if) he comes at us. We don’t have to run in fear! We don’t have to give in and let him keep us from our run. You are to remember who you are and Who is with you . . .“Greater is He Who is within you than he who is in the world” (I John 4:4).

So when we see the devil coming at us with his temptations and fiery darts of doubt, discouragement and fear, we are to stand against him and watch him cower like a dog, and turn and walk away! The Bible says to, “Resist (stand firmly against) the devil and he will flee from you” (James 4:7). Do you really believe that, or not?! That’s God’s Word! He doesn’t lie! Why does God tell us to stand firm against the devil? It has to do with what the Lord has already given us. The Book of Ephesians tells us we have been blessed already “with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ” (Eph. 1:3). It tells us that we are “seated with Him in the heavenly places in Christ” (Eph. 2:6). We are to stand firm against the devil so that we do not lose one inch of blessing ground that God has already given to us. “Neither give place (ground) to the devil” (Eph. 4:27). That one verse assures us we do not have to let the devil push us around!

Jesus tells us that the devil is a thief. He comes only to steal and kill and destroy (John 10:10). He comes at us to steal away our joy, peace, power and blessings that God has already given to us to enjoy. The way you deal with the devil is the same way you would deal with a thief. As with any thief, we should take authority over him and stand firm. Sadly, many Christians are failing to do this, and, as a result, they are letting the thief steal them blind. That’s right, I said, “Letting.” He cannot take anything from you unless you let him. Suppose some little, scrawny, unarmed, weakling of a man…that you knew you could whip…walked in the front door of your house and started hauling off all of your stuff. He starts taking your TV, your computer, your refrigerator, your jewelry, etc. How would you respond? Would you just shrink up in a corner and let him have his way? Would you call your friends and gripe and complain about all that guy did to you? Of course not! You would face this one you can whip and tell him to drop it… and beat it! You would take authority and stand firm. Jesus Christ has all power and all authority. If you are genuinely born again, Jesus Christ lives in you. You have power and authority over the devil and his demonic crew. You have the full armor of God to stand up to your enemy and defeat him every time in Jesus’ name.

You can’t run the Christian race and be lazy and undisciplined. Yes, the Bible does say, “Thanks be unto God who causes us to triumph in Christ” (2 Corinth. 2:14). But you and I have to do our part! We have to believe we have the Lord and His strength always with us and we must STAND in His strength against the enemy! Quit whining and crying while he steals you blind . . .and start standing up to him!! Take the full armor that God has given you and the weapons of the Word and prayer and begin to defend your spiritual ground. As

Nehemiah told the people who were building the wall in Jerusalem, “Do not be afraid of them; remember the Lord who is great and awesome, and FIGHT!” Will you fight for your marriage? Will you fight for your children? Will you fight for your church? Will you fight for the Christian values in America we see eroding away before our eyes every day? Will you fight to keep all the blessings God has so graciously bestowed upon you? Our battle is not against flesh and blood… it is against the devil and his demons (see Eph. 6:12). And we have the victory!!

The time is NOW for God’s people to stand firm against the wiles and schemes of the devil. Are you with me? Yes . . .keep running your race, but when the devil comes out with his barking and growling, stop and stand against him! Watch him turn and flee from you like the whipped puppy he is!

You’ve got the victory!

You have God’s Word on it! So, STAND FIRM!

Think it over…
