Free From Worry and Bondage

by Roland Ledoux

“Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life . . . Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow.” Matthew 6:25-34

One of the greatest chains of bondage the human race carries is that of worry and anxiety. Sadly, with all going on in the world around us today, it is becoming an even greater burden. However, as parents and grandparents, we have something that we can truly pass on to our children and their children; a legacy of freedom from stress and worry.

Now don’t get me wrong, every generation that has ever lived has at one time or another had to live in the midst of worry. That is sadly, a part of the fallen nature of man. But . . . Christ Jesus came and delivered us from all types of bondage that is related to sin. You will find throughout the written Word of God many instances, not just from the words of Jesus, Himself, but words inspired by the Holy Spirit through the writers, not to worry!

There is one great advantage to being older in the Lord. (Many more, but that’s rhetorical). As we get older and have at least tried to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit we have acquired much more experience that verifies and witnesses to the truth of the words in the Holy Word.

I don’t worry now nearly as much as I did when I was younger. In fact, there are so many fewer instances and yet, from the world’s perspective, there should be more to worry about with health and financial concerns and caring for many more loved ones. However, experience has taught me that my God is in control of all details in our lives, the big and the small.

It is this legacy of experience that is a treasure trove that can be passed on to your children and to their children! Too many times, it is the one thing of value that we have that is often overlooked. After all, worry and stress are just part of life, right? Again, in Christ Jesus, they do not have to be a major part at all. Sadly, worry is one of those things that come into our lives in which we do learn from. I wouldn’t be able to cast worry aside today, if I hadn’t experienced it when I was younger, but that learning is something of value that can be passed on. Those that receive it won’t be exempt from it entirely, but when we give them the secret to dispel worry, if they put it into practice, they walk with less worry and (the added benefit) increased faith.

I have a statistic that I recently used not too long ago in one of my expository teachings and it is so fitting here.

In a study completed over 40 years ago by a Dr. Walter Calvert, and funded by the National Science Foundation, in which thousands of people were interviewed about their perception of worry in their lives, it was found that only 8% of what we worry about comes true. It breaks down like this:

40% of the things we worry about never happen.
30% of our worries are about events in the past.
12% of our worries are unfounded health concerns.
10% of our worries are over minor and trivial issues.
Only 8% of our worries are real, legitimate issues.

Of that 8% though, many were reported to have been events in which the person learned a valuable lesson or were handled better than the person expected.1

Now, to continue with the “secret” that we have from the Lord: our Heavenly Father knows well in advance all the needs we have and how having those needs met will affect others in our lives. We need to remember, Jesus was not talking to us about the luxuries of life, those things we want that only satisfy the cravings of this world. He was talking about all the things that are necessary to live a healthy and abundant life. Remember, He came to gives His followers a more abundant life (John 10:10). Again, Jesus came to give that to us!

Experience teaches that those words, that promise, is always fulfilled. All the times that I needlessly worried about something beyond my control, was just that, needless! My adult sons are learning that what I have related to them along those lines from the Word of God is true and that I have not been deceptive in teaching them those truths. They both are maturing and learning so much faster than I ever did. However, understand this; if we hadn’t passed it on, they would not be learning it, rather they would be stumbling through life still chained and in bondage.

Everyone is so familiar with the following Scripture, but again, as in all the Word of God, it is so very true:

Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it. – Proverbs 22:6.

If you want this up and coming generation to move forward with their heads held high looking forward to Christ Jesus and his coming Kingdom, teach them how to break free from the bondage of worry.
