A Scripture and a Prayer: “The Immediacy of the Call”

“‘Come, follow me,’ Jesus said, ‘and I will send you out to fish for people.’ At once they left their nets and followed him.” (Mark 1:17-18)

 Prayer:

Lord, help me to always realize that Your call for me to be a fisher of men isn’t for some time later, sometime in the future, but it is Your calling for my life today. Help me to never put my own desires in front of Your Great Commission to go and make disciples of all nations. Open my eyes to see the world around me, from my family and friends to those within my community and beyond with Your eyes. May I see them as You see them as those in need of the hope of Your salvation. Therefore, Lord, may I be like Isaiah who responded to Your call, “Here am I, Lord, send me.” And this I ask in Jesus’s name. AMEN

As I read about the immediacy of following Jesus in the opening scripture quoted here, I also see that they not only responded immediately, but they were willing to sacrifice their livelihood in order to do so. “At once they left their nets and followed him.” What this tells me is that the only way we’re going to follow Jesus and answer His call for His kingdom immediately is if we indeed are willing to sacrifice whatever it is we are holding onto in order to do so. It may not always necessarily be our jobs, as God does use our jobs as mission fields to impact those we work with and around, but we all need to ask the question individually before God: what is it for us we are holding and unwilling to give up that is keeping us from moving forward. Then we need to allow the Holy Spirit to guide us and be obedient to what He tells us.

This is absolutely 100% spot on. That calling is not for the weekend you choose, or next month. Jesus placed in our hearts (yours and mine) to reach our teaching others of our Lord and King. That calling in your heart is real and it needs to be acted upon today. EXCELLENT and AMEN.
